Son of the Orient Seas: An Autobiography
by Armando A. de la Cruz, Ph.D.

Son of the Orient Seas provides a telegraphic history of the Philippines and brings light to the oppressive Japanese occupation of the Philippines in World War II. The author shares his own childhood experiences during such times of upheaval as well as his struggle to achieve a decent early education. Perseverance wins him a world-class education and an academic profession that most have only dreamed of.

Complete with charming tales of a personal love boat meeting, long distance courtship and lucid memories of strange dreams, de la Cruz provides a window into the life of his hard-working and determined immigrant family. Though written as a tangible legacy for his family and friends, Son of the Orient Seas offers interesting, amusing and even heart-warming stories of one remarkable mans life.

Son of the Orient Seas, an Autobiography by Dr. Armando A. De La Cruz, PH.D.

Posted by Miriam Day on Feb 17th 2018

Dr. Armando A. de la Cruz was true grit. His indomitable spirit did not take No for an answer. He dug his heels deep until there was no more digging to do and he resurfaced triumphant. He is the pride of not only his immediate family but he is the pride of his country to the truest sense of the word. His life story tugs at the heart strings of the underprivileged and poverty-stricken children of uneducated parents in the Third World countries such as his place of birth, the Philippine Islands. I find this autobiography to be an enjoyable and delightful reading, especially with a chapter focused on a playboy meeting a princess on the cruise ship, homeward bound. This serendipity blossomed into a long-distance romance and ultimate wedding bells. Dialogues show a touch of cultural humor that only Filipinos and Filipino-Americans can understand and appreciate; but, with translation provided, anyone reading can identify and see the universal charm and magic the conversations reveal. Conflict and tension arising from in-law interference spice up the story, which resonates with every Filipino and Filipino-American family, which I might add is universal, albeit, with a cultural twist. Today, Dr. Armando A. de la Cruz and his wife, Ruth (formerly Ruth Mendoza), are happily living their retirement life in their abode in Starkville, Mississippi. I highly recommend picking up this book not only for its captivating unconventional love story but also for its historical and educational value that appeals to every dreamer in every land no matter what creed, religion or ethnic background they originated from.
